In April of 2016, Facebook added a new feature to the Messenger application that is completely changing the game. With the launching of “Messenger Bots,” Facebook created a new form of communication that can be very beneficial for many people. Before we get into how beneficial they are or the opportunities they provide, let’s get some background information on the bots.
What is a bot?
A “bot” is a computer program that does automated tasks for users. Some bots run automatically, while others only perform when they receive specific input. There are many different types of bots that are used in the internet world but for the sake of this article we are only going to look at the chat bots. What is a chat bot though? Think of it like this. Try to picture the last time you called a store and there was an automated voice telling you different commands to press based off what your needs may be. Now imagine that, only in the most conversational and informative way possible with even more possilities such as making a purchase straight from it.
How Messenger Bots are Used?
Messenger Bots can be used in a variety of different ways. For example, you can set up a Messenger Bot to communicate and interact with existing or potential customers. The bot can give them any information they are looking for and can be as detailed and precise as you make it. Let’s say you’re the owner of a restaurant. You can set up a Facebook Messenger Bot that reserves tables, displays your menu, gives your location and hours and whatever else you tell it to! How cool is that? For another example, let’s say you are a sales company trying to figure out information on consumers. While every business should be taking advantage of the Facebook Messenger Bots, you need to be sure you’re using them effectively. After creating our own bot for SoZesty’s Facebook page, we found out that there are certain things you can do to get the best results from the bots. Below are our top 3 favorite tips which are inspired from Murray Newlands, founder of Chattypeople.com.
- Adapt your chatbot according to customer feedback. Don’t be afraid to reach out for feedback from your customers or people interacting with your bot. The more feedback you get, the more flaws you can find and fix. Take criticism and use it to your advantage to get better!
- Educate customers about your chat bot. If people don’t know that you have a bot, how will you get anyone to engage with it? Let them know! Give specific information about your bot such as when it’s available, the purpose, the functionalities, where it can be found, etc.
- Limit how many options your chatbot offers. Keep it simple, people like simple. If your bot has an excessive amount of options it can become overwhelming for the people interacting with it and cause frustration.
